This week in English...

There are a lot of students out with the flu or strep throat this week. I know when you return,  there will be a lot of make-up work and assignments to complete. I created this post to streamline the English information for the week to help you out. If you still need help or don't understand, please let me know. If you have misplaced your pronoun notes or practice sheets, they are posted on the blog here.

Monday-We took the winter reading scantron test. This is something you have to make-up on the chromebook. It's not for points, but it has to be done within two weeks.

Tuesday- Reflexive and Intensive Pronouns

•  Reflexive and Intensive pronouns end in “self” or “selves.”  Reflexive and intensive pronouns must refer back to a previous antecedent in the sentence.
• Reflexive Pronouns refer back to the subject of the sentence and are used as direct objects, indirect objects, or objects of prepositions.
• Intensive Pronouns are used to emphasize another word in the sentence.

Wednesday- Indefinite Pronouns

• An Indefinite Pronoun does not refer to a specific person, place, thing, or idea.
• Indefinite pronouns often do not have antecedents.
• Indefinite pronouns can be singular, plural, or singular/plural.
• Pronouns containing –one, -thing, or –body are always singular.
•  Singular Indefinite Pronouns-Use a singular personal pronoun to refer to a singular indefinite pronoun.
• Plural Indefinite Pronouns-Use a plural personal pronoun to refer to a plural indefinite pronoun.
• Singular OR Plural Indefinite Pronouns-Some indefinite pronouns can be singular or plural . Often the words/phrase that follows the indefinite pronoun will tell you whether the pronoun is singular or plural.
• **Why does this matter???
• Agreement can help keep your sentences and writing clear. 
• Make sure that all pronouns agree with their indefinite antecedents in number.

Thursday- We completed a mini-quiz on pronouns to helps us prepare for the test next week. You will need to make this up once you have completed the notes/practice above. 

Friday- We went over the mini-quiz from yesterday and discussed commonly missed questions. Then, students completed a pronoun practice document through Google Classroom.

It’s time for our 4th Annual HTMS Mini-Course Day! Mini-Courses will be held on Friday, December 14th and are a great way to learn more about a topic of interest or practice a skill! Please read the following information carefully about searching the catalog and signing up for a Mini-Course:

• The Sign Up link will be available in your English/ Language Arts Google Classroom 12/6/18 at exactly 3:00 pm. 
• Many courses will fill up quickly so please choose a few that you are interested in before logging in to sign up.
• If you do not get your desired mini-course and want to be placed on stand-by for that particular course, you have the option to complete the Stand-By Form. This link will be attached to the information in your ELA Google Classroom. You will need to register for another course in case a spot does not open up.
• If you sign up for a course and decide to NOT come to school on Friday, December 14th, please cancel your sign up or email Mrs. DeMent so that your spot can be given to a student from the stand-by form.

Grammar Review

Yesterday, students completed a practice test for direct/indirect objects and predicate words. We discussed the practice test in class in preparation for the test that is scheduled for tomorrow. Grammar Review (Friday)

Preposition Poem

After the test Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday we will be working on preposition poems in class. Students will read some examples of preposition poems, brainstorm for their own poem, and write their rough draft. Then, students will edit/revise the poem and write a final draft. If students don't turn in the final draft in class on Friday, they must turn it in on Monday, 11/19/18 at the beginning of class.

Root Test

We will have a root test on Friday on the following roots: ad, aud, mit/mis. Students should study their roots graphic organizers and be prepared to show them for credit in class.

Mystery Story Checklist/Rubric

We have been working on mystery stories in class for the last few weeks. The final draft is due this Wednesday, 10/31/18. Thursday, students were provided with the grading rubric and a checklist to use as they revise and edit their stories. This week we have started pre-writing for our mystery stories. We will go through each part of the pre-writing and writing process in class together. Students were given the two handouts below as part of the pre-writing process. If they misplace their own copies, they can print new ones below.

Root Test

Students have a roots test on roots 7-9 on Friday, 10/19/18, in reading class. Students should have one graphic organizer for each of the following roots:
Fin
Spec
Vac

I will check for the completed graphic organizers in class on Friday for a grade before the test. Students should study the root definition, each root word (10 total), and spelling of each root word for the test. Students will also need to write a sentence using the root words.

1st Nine Weeks Benchmark

You will take the first nine weeks benchmark for English class today. Do your best and read every question thoroughly. The test is set up for you to progressively do well as you learn material throughout the year. This means, you have not yet learned some of the material covered on the test. That's ok! You should still do your best on every question.

We have covered information for questions 1-13 already this year. 

• Once you are finished with the test, it will give you a chance to review answers before you make the final submission.  
• Once you do your final submission, the next page will show you a Certificate of Achievement. You will need to use this page to complete your Benchmark Data Target Tracker/Reflection. DO NOT close this page until you have completely finished your Target Tracker/Reflection. 
• While the benchmark itself is not for a grade, you will get a grade for the reflection sheet.  
• Use the information on the Grade Report page to see which questions you got correct and incorrect. Then, complete the reflection questions below. 
• Mrs. Oliveira will check for your completed reflection at the end of class.

Mysteries of Harris Burdick- Mystery Story Inspirations

We are beginning a new unit on "Mystery Writing" this week. Each student will choose one image from the "Mysteries of Harris Burdick" as inspiration for this writing assignment. Below, you will see several pictures from the "Mysteries of Harris Burdick." Choose one picture on which to base your mystery story. You will need to use the caption in your story.

Strange Visitor Plot Analysis

Wednesday we read "Strange Visitor" in class. This story is full of suspense and mystery...and it even ends in a cliffhanger! We will work in class on analyzing the plot, conflict, and setting of the story on Wednesday and Thursday. If you don't finish in class on Thursday, it will be for homework and due at the beginning of class on Friday.

Below is a copy of the story for you to use if you need to work from home. Additionally, there is another copy of the analysis sheet if you misplaced your own copy.
